ENOCH ARDEN?

Enoch Arden, hero of Tennyson's famous poem of that name, succeeded in marrying sweet Annie Lee, the prettiest little damsel in the port, although Philip Ray, the friend of his youth, was also in love with her. After seven happy years of married life, however, Enoch was shipwrecked, and did not reach his native land for many long years, so that Annie gave up all hope for his return, and eventually married Philip Ray. Coming up to the window of his house one evening, Enoch saw them together, happily surrounded by his children, together with Philip's little child, but very nobly he forbore to make himself known, and left them to their happiness. Most Enoch Ardens, needless to say, are not so obliging, and every year we read of instances wherein husbands given up for lost return and cause complications which lead to the courts.
